Getting more exercise is one of the most popular resolutions, be it new year, season, new month or a Monday. But then comes the hard part, right? Sticking it through until results start to appear and beyond.

If you are serious about sticking to your resolution you may want to consider a little planning, rather than ‘Play it by ear’ approach.

From my experience, it rarely works out to be spontaneous in your working out!

I’ve been training martial arts for about 14 years now, adding other types of training along the way too in order to keep things dynamic.

There are a few useful things to remember if you want to make your resolution last this time.

We all know that exercise makes us feel and look great but it’s benefits are so great and far reaching that it’s truly worth sticking to this time.

I still remember my first year of Hapkido… it wasn’t a pretty picture. I was 14 years younger but very weak and unfit. Looking back, getting serious about my health was the best decision I have ever made!

So here…

Tip #1

Sit down with your calendar in front of you and block out the times you plan to work out a month in advance. Make it a non- negotiable part of your week.

Planning ahead takes the thinking out of it and helps you avoid the excuse of ‘too busy this week’. We can all find time to do something even during the busy weeks but planning is essential. And even a little bit of exercise is beneficial.

Tip #2

Make it fun! To me, there could be nothing worse than a lonely trip to the gym and jumping on a treadmill! Group training is where it’s at for me, but you may love the quiet time in the gym. Do what you enjoy and don’t be afraid to mix it up and try new things.

Tip #3

Get a training partner. That’s what I love about group training. Your training partner/s keep you motivated and accountable. If I don’t show up I need to explain why!
