Nutritional education is everything when it comes to taking control of our own health, you just need a little curiosity to investigate. Understanding our body, how food affects us, our food system and environment, can help us navigate through the marketing and diet trends to live a simple healthy lifestyle. The information is out there in spades, but finding reliable and trustworthy sources is important. There is everything from books, websites, podcasts, documentaries, TEDTalks, YouTube, blogs and social media.
Here are 8 of the best resources for health and nutrition information to sink your teeth into for a healthier 2017:
‘In Defense of Food’ – Michael Pollan

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants” – Pollan’s simple answer to how we can eat healthy. Pollan discusses how returning to eating real, well-grown, unprocessed food like our grandmothers used to, we can prevent and reverse chronic diseases and return to a healthier state. He shows us how we can start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating.
‘Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating’ – Mark Bittman
This book is as much about how our farming, food system and personal food choices are affecting our environment as it is about our own health. It’s a plan for responsible eating that’s as good for the planet as it is for your weight and your health.
Husband and wife duo put together a powerful informative documentary around Hippocrates premise, ‘let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’. The film interviews several world leaders in nutrition and natural health and provides us access to solid information helps people invariably make better choices for their health.
Hungry for Change’
Another documentary by the Food Matters team. This one looks at why dieting is unsuccessful, our sugar consumption and the insincere marketing of food. Watch this movie to learn lifestyle habits for sustainable health and weight loss.
‘Ideas worth spreading’. TEDTalks would have to be one of my most favourite resources for interesting information on various health topics, and there are hundreds. Each presentation usually goes for 15-20mins. Add these to your list to watch:

“Why I’m a weekday vegetarian” – Graham Hill
“Try something new for 30 days” – Matt Cutts
“Plant strong and healthy living” – Rip Esselstyn
“Obesity and food” – Jamie Oliver

These guys are an encyclopedia of everything fitness/science/nutrition/supplement related and a must listen to for every health and fitness nut. The main guy is a trained Naturopath and head scientist and product creator at ATP Science. There are now some 80+ podcasts and growing and whilst I haven’t listen to all (yet), what I have has been incredibly informative and thought-changing.
If you are really after solid scientific literature on health information, PubMed provides evidence-based articles and journals. It helps if you have a bit of a science background (e.g. have studied in a field of science, medicine, nutrition, personal training, etc.) in order to get your head around the science literature, but a very reliable trustworthy source.
