Move over kale. Goji berry who? There are new kids on the block in the superfood scene.

Sure, we know how to eat healthy. We know we need to eat more vegetables and less processed food. But if you want to boost your nutritional intake, superfood is where it’s at.

You heard it here first. Here are the top superfood trends and why you should add these to your diet in 2017:

1. Plant-based meat alternatives
The world is changing. Veganism and plant-based diets are gaining incredible momentum. Plant-based alternatives to food such as burgers, cheese, milk and eggs are set to soar in 2017. And it’s getting creative. Think, vegan bacon chips made from coconut. Cauliflower, cashew and macadamia cheeses. Jackfruit and garbanzo bean burgers. Eating plant-based doesn’t seem so hard.

2. Hemp seeds
Eco-friendly, incredibly nutritious, and boasting many health benefits. Hemp is great source of high-quality complete protein and essential fatty acids. Hemp is rich in antioxidants. vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc. Use it in salads, curries, stews, smoothies and health snacks like protein balls.

Hemp seeds are part of the Cannabis plant but they don’t contain THC (the compound that causes the drug-like effects of marijuana). Australia has not yet approved the sale of hemp as a “food product” (currently it is only sold for “cosmetic use”). This could all change in 2017… watch this space.

3. Sea vegetables
Sea vegetables such as kelp, wakame, dulse and nori are some of the most nutritious foods on the planet. Sea vegetables are a good source of iodine for heathy thyroid function. They provide vitamin A & C, potassium, iron and zinc. Algae, in particular is rich in EPA and DHA, a great plant-based source of omega-3’s for those who don’t eat fish. There is even a Red Algae variety that tastes like bacon. I’m not even joking.

4. Jun
Just as we got hooked on Kombucha – in comes Jun. Jun is a fermented green tea with honey (as opposed to Kombucha made from black tea and sugar). Known as the champagne of Kombucha’s, Jun has a slight fizz but not as sour. If you loved Kombucha, you must try Jun in 2017.

5. Black Bean Pasta
From gluten free pasta to zucchini spirals, quinoa, buckwheat or chickpea flour pasta. We can’t give up this all-time favourite food, and why should we?! Black bean pasta is set to soar this year. It’s packed with protein and fiber, and lower in carbs than standard pasta. Top with a vegan bolognese and cashew cheese to show off to your foodie health friends.
