Essential Makeup Tips for a Flawless Fitness Model Portfolio Shoot
Written by AEFM International
Skincare is the most important part of the day and night, especially if makeup has to be worn every day. The skin must be taken care of. If a person really wants their makeup to look flawless, the skin must be prepped at least 30 minutes before applying makeup. It would be even better if the skin has been prepped at night and is ready to go for the day. This would make it much easier to wake up in the morning and start with makeup. The good thing about makeup recommendations for my clients has been much easier as almost every brand nowadays has been reformulating their products into vegan, cruelty-free, and made without parabens and sulfates, which makes it suitable for almost every person’s skin type.
When it comes to gender, every product would be the same for male and female depending on their skin type. So it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s male or female. Apart from other skincare products for shaving or ingrown hair treatments due to having a beard, everything else would be the same. All the skincare products, especially in Mecca, are unisex. So men and women can use literally anything. Some products which have a masculine scent such as shower gels or hand creams would be considered as homme products or would be specifically labeled. Another tip that is necessary for both men and women is always wearing sunscreen. The best sunscreen to be worn especially under makeup will be the lightweight one. I personally love Mecca Cosmetica SPF50 niacinamide serum or the Mecca Cosmetica SPF30 makeup base. When skincare is done at night, it will be much easier to wear sunscreen and then primer just before doing makeup. So basically, you don’t want to layer everything up 5 minutes before doing makeup, which will require more time but at the same time makes the face look too oily or muddy. If the process is divided into two parts, one at night 30 minutes before sleep and then the second when waking up in the morning, it makes it very easy. Using the right products makes it less confusing for a person who is just starting a skin routine.
There are a few easy steps necessary before applying and also when removing makeup:
Cleanse
A meticulous cleansing routine is essential to achieve a flawless look. Start by using a gentle facial cleanser designed for your skin type to remove any accumulated dirt, oil, and impurities. This initial step helps to prepare your skin by providing a fresh and clean canvas, which is crucial for the makeup application process. A well-cleansed face ensures that makeup adheres evenly and lasts longer, making it easier for commercial photographers and videographers to capture your best features. It also helps to prevent clogged pores and potential breakouts, ensuring that your skin looks its best on camera.
Incorporate this cleansing step into your pre-shoot routine to set the foundation for a professional appearance. By starting with a clean slate, you help to enhance the overall effectiveness of your skincare and makeup products. This practice not only contributes to a polished look but also showcases your commitment to maintaining high standards as a fitness model.
Dry Skin
After cleansing, ensuring your skin is completely dry is a crucial step in preparing for your portfolio shoot. Moisture left on the skin can interfere with the even application of makeup, leading to a less polished appearance. Gently pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel, avoiding any harsh rubbing that could irritate the skin. Allowing your skin to air dry for a few minutes can also help, ensuring that any residual moisture evaporates completely. This step is particularly important for fitness and athletic models who need their makeup to withstand the rigors of a shoot, including any physical activity.
A dry surface ensures that makeup products, such as foundations and powders, apply smoothly and stay in place throughout the shoot. By taking the time to thoroughly dry your skin, you create an ideal base for makeup application, contributing to a flawless finish that will look exceptional in photos and videos. This attention to detail highlights your professionalism and readiness as a fitness model, making you stand out in a competitive industry.
Oil Cleanser
Using an oil cleanser can be a game-changer for fitness models preparing for a portfolio shoot. Oil cleansers are highly effective at breaking down and removing stubborn makeup, sunscreen, and excess oils that a standard cleanser might miss. This step is particularly useful if you have worn heavy or waterproof makeup, as it ensures that all residues are thoroughly eliminated, leaving your skin clean and ready for the next steps. The oil-based formula also helps to dissolve impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils, which is beneficial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
To use an oil cleanser, apply a small amount to dry skin and gently massage it in circular motions to dissolve makeup and impurities. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and follow up with your regular facial cleanser to ensure any remaining residue is removed. This dual-cleansing method helps to achieve a deep clean, making it an essential part of your pre-shoot routine. For fitness and female fitness models, incorporating an oil cleanser into your preparation ensures a clean, smooth base for makeup application, contributing to a professional and radiant appearance in your portfolio.
Milk Cleanser
Incorporating a milk cleanser into your skincare routine can be highly beneficial. Milk cleansers are known for their gentle, hydrating properties, which make them ideal for removing impurities while nourishing the skin. These cleansers are formulated with a blend of milk proteins and natural oils that effectively dissolve dirt, makeup, and excess oil without stripping away essential moisture. This makes them particularly suitable for those with sensitive or dry skin, as they provide a soft and soothing cleanse that maintains your skin’s natural balance.
When using a milk cleanser, apply a generous amount to dry skin and gently massage in circular motions. This helps to break down makeup and impurities while also delivering hydration. Rinse off with lukewarm water and follow with your usual skincare routine. By using a milk cleanser before your portfolio shoot, you ensure that your skin is thoroughly cleaned and prepped without feeling tight or dry. This approach helps to create a smooth, well-hydrated canvas for makeup application.
Oily Skin
Talent with oily skin, proper cleansing is essential to achieve a flawless look for your professional portfolio shoot. Oily skin can lead to excess shine and make makeup application challenging, so it’s important to start with a thorough cleansing routine. Use a foaming or gel-based cleanser specifically formulated for oily skin. These types of cleansers help to remove excess oil and prevent clogged pores without over-drying the skin. They work effectively to balance oil production and ensure your skin is fresh and clean, providing an ideal base for makeup.
In addition to cleansing, consider using a toner with oil-absorbing properties to further control shine and refine your skin’s texture. After cleansing and toning, ensure that your skin is completely dry before applying any makeup. This prevents makeup from breaking down or becoming uneven.
Effective cleansing is crucial to ensure a polished look for your portfolio shoot. Begin by using a foaming or gel cleanser tailored for oily skin. These types of cleansers are designed to combat excess oil and prevent pore congestion while maintaining a balanced skin condition. This preparation step helps to create a clean, matte surface.
Following your cleansing routine, apply a toner with oil-absorbing properties to manage shine and further refine your skin’s texture. Ensure your skin is completely dry before applying makeup to prevent any product from becoming uneven or breaking down. This routine is key for achieving a flawless, and matte finish.
Jelly cleanser/Balm cleanser
With oily skin, a balm cleanser offers a rich and effective way to prepare your skin for a portfolio shoot. Balm cleansers are formulated to melt away stubborn makeup and impurities, making them particularly useful for removing sweat and other residues. Their nourishing ingredients help to balance oil production while providing a thorough cleanse, ensuring your skin remains clear and smooth.
To use, apply the balm cleanser to dry skin and massage in circular motions before rinsing off with warm water. Follow up with a toner to manage excess shine and further refine your skin’s texture. By making sure your skin is fully dry before applying makeup.
Foam cleanser
For a fresh and effective cleanse consider using a foam cleanser. This cleanser generates a light, airy foam that efficiently removes excess oil, sweat, and impurities, leaving your skin feeling clean and refreshed. Its gentle formula ensures that your skin is balanced and ready for makeup application without stripping away essential moisture.
Use the foam cleanser by applying it to damp skin, gently massaging it in before rinsing off. Finish with a toner to control shine and further refine your skin’s texture. By ensuring your skin is thoroughly dry before applying makeup.
Toner
Incorporating a toner is essential for fitness models and athletic talent with oily skin. Toners help to refine your skin’s texture, reduce excess shine, and tighten pores, providing a balanced and smooth surface for makeup application. By removing any residual impurities and balancing your skin’s pH levels, a toner ensures that your complexion is perfectly prepped for a flawless finish.
After cleansing, apply a toner to a cotton pad and gently sweep it across your face. This step helps to control oil production and refine the skin’s surface, creating an ideal canvas for makeup. Allow the toner to dry completely before applying any foundation or other makeup products.
Dry Skin
Talent with dry skin, proper preparation is key to achieving a smooth and radiant look for your portfolio shoot. After cleansing your face, it’s crucial to ensure that your skin is thoroughly dry before applying any makeup. Gently pat your skin with a soft, clean towel to remove excess moisture, being careful not to rub or irritate your complexion. This step helps to prevent any interference with makeup application and ensures that your products adhere evenly. Make sure your skin is completely dry before proceeding with makeup to achieve a flawless finish. Dry skin provides a smooth canvas that enhances the application and longevity of makeup products.
Essence or hydrating mist
A hydrating mist is an excellent addition to the skincare routine for fitness models with dry skin. This refreshing spray delivers a burst of moisture, revitalising and hydrating the skin instantly. Using a hydrating mist throughout the day or as part of your pre-shoot preparation helps to maintain a dewy and radiant complexion, ensuring your skin stays refreshed and comfortable under the lights. To use, hold the mist about 15-20 cm from your face and lightly spritz it over your skin, allowing it to dry naturally. This quick and easy step not only boosts hydration but also helps to set your makeup, providing a smooth, even finish. By incorporating a hydrating mist into your routine, you ensure that your skin remains well-moisturised and glowing
Toner with AHAs or BHAs for Oily Skin
For talent managing oily skin, a toner containing AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) can be particularly effective in your pre-shoot skincare routine. These types of toners are designed to exfoliate the skin gently, removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. AHAs, such as glycolic acid, work on the skin’s surface to improve texture and brightness, while BHAs, like salicylic acid, penetrate deeper to clear out pores and reduce excess oil.
Apply the toner with AHAs or BHAs after cleansing your face, using a cotton pad to sweep it evenly across your skin. This helps to refine your complexion and control oil production, creating a smoother surface for makeup application. By incorporating this type of toner, you enhance your skin’s clarity and balance, ensuring a fresh and polished look.
Toner with Salicylic Acid for Oily Skin
For models with oily skin, a toner containing salicylic acid is a powerful addition to your pre-shoot skincare regimen. Salicylic acid is known for its ability to penetrate deep into pores, helping to dissolve excess oil and remove impurities that can lead to breakouts. This type of toner effectively reduces shine and helps to control oil production, ensuring your skin remains clear and balanced.
After cleansing, apply the salicylic acid toner to a cotton pad and gently apply it to your face, focusing on areas prone to oiliness. This step helps to minimise pore congestion and refine your skin’s texture, providing a smooth and even base for makeup application. By using a salicylic acid toner, you can achieve a matte finish.
Hyaluronic Acid Serum for Dry Skin
Incorporating a hyaluronic acid serum into your pre-shoot skincare routine is highly beneficial. Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its exceptional ability to attract and retain moisture, providing deep hydration and plumping the skin. Applying a hyaluronic acid serum helps to replenish lost moisture, creating a smooth, dewy base that enhances the application and longevity of makeup.
To use, apply a few drops of the serum to your face after cleansing and before moisturising. Gently pat it into the skin, allowing it to fully absorb before proceeding with the next steps in your skincare routine. This step ensures that your skin remains hydrated and radiant.
Vitamin C or Niacinamide Serum for Oily and Dry Skin
Whether you have oily or dry skin, a serum containing Vitamin C or niacinamide is a versatile choice for your pre-shoot skincare routine. Vitamin C is known for its brightening and antioxidant properties, which help to even out skin tone and protect against environmental damage. Niacinamide, on the other hand, is praised for its ability to regulate oil production, reduce redness, and improve overall skin texture. Both ingredients contribute to a clearer, more radiant complexion.
Apply a few drops of the serum to your face after cleansing and before applying moisturiser. Gently massage it into the skin, focusing on areas that need brightening or balancing. This treatment helps to refine your skin’s appearance and ensures a smooth, even base for makeup application. Using a Vitamin C or niacinamide serum enhances your professional look.
Pore Minimising Serum for Oily Skin
Adding a pore minimising serum into your pre-shoot routine can significantly enhance your skin’s appearance. These serums are specially designed to reduce the appearance of pores and control excess oil. By using ingredients like niacinamide or salicylic acid, a pore minimising serum helps to refine your skin’s texture, smooth out uneven areas, and diminish shine. Apply the serum after cleansing and before moisturising. Gently massage a small amount into areas with enlarged pores and excess oil, allowing it to fully absorb.
Hyaluronic Acid Cream for Dry Skin
Using a hyaluronic acid cream is essential for achieving a well-hydrated, radiant look before your shoot. Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to attract and retain moisture, providing deep hydration and helping to plump up the skin. Applying a hyaluronic acid cream ensures that your skin is not only moisturised but also has a smooth, supple texture, which is ideal for makeup application.
To use, apply a generous layer of the cream to your face after cleansing and serum application. Gently massage it into your skin, focusing on areas that tend to be drier. This step locks in moisture and creates a hydrated, dewy base.
Niacinamide or Vitamin C Cream for Dry and Oily Skin
For both dry and oily skin types, incorporating a niacinamide or vitamin C cream into your skincare routine can be highly beneficial. Niacinamide helps to improve skin texture, control oil production, and reduce redness, while Vitamin C brightens the complexion and provides antioxidant protection. Using either of these creams can help to balance your skin, enhance its natural glow, and ensure a smooth, even surface for makeup application.
Apply the cream after cleansing and applying serum. Gently massage it into your face, ensuring even coverage across your skin.
Hyaluronic Oil-Free Moisturizer for Oily Skin
A hyaluronic oil-free moisturiser is an excellent choice to keep your skin hydrated without adding extra shine. This type of moisturiser combines the hydrating benefits of hyaluronic acid with a lightweight, oil-free formula that helps to control excess oil and balance your complexion. It provides essential moisture while preventing the skin from feeling greasy or heavy, ensuring a smooth and matte finish.
To use, apply a thin layer of the oil-free moisturizer to your face after cleansing and serum application. Gently massage it in until fully absorbed, focusing on areas that need hydration. This step helps maintain skin hydration and texture.
Water-Based Moisturiser for Oily Skin
For those with oily skin, a water-based or lightweight moisturiser is a smart choice for your pre-shoot skincare routine. These moisturisers are designed to provide hydration without adding excess oil or weight, making them ideal for balancing oily skin. Their water-based formulation ensures that your skin receives essential moisture while staying matte and shine-free.
Apply the water-based moisturiser after cleansing and serum application. Smooth a small amount over your face, allowing it to absorb completely.
Makeup Steps
Primer for Dry Skin
The first step in your makeup routine is primer, which sets the stage for a flawless application and helps your makeup last longer. For dry skin, choosing the right primer is crucial to ensure a smooth, hydrated base. Opt for a hydrating primer to add moisture and create a dewy finish that complements your skin’s natural texture. Mecca Cosmetica’s Hydrating Primer and Laura Mercier’s Hydrating Primer are excellent choices, both designed to nourish and plump the skin, reducing the appearance of dryness and flakiness.
Apply your chosen primer using your fingertips to gently massage it into the skin, focusing on areas that need extra hydration. This method helps the primer blend seamlessly and ensures it provides a smooth, even base for foundation. For additional colour correction, Stila’s One-Step Correct primer can be used to address uneven tones and brighten your complexion.
Primer for Oily Skin
Applying a primer is essential for achieving a flawless finish, especially if you have oily skin. A good primer helps to control excess shine and minimize the appearance of pores, setting a smooth base for your foundation. NARS Pore & Shine Control Primer is an excellent choice, as it effectively mattifies the skin and reduces the look of pores, helping to keep oil at bay throughout the day. Another great option is Hourglass’s Oil-Free Veil Primer, which provides a lightweight, oil-free formula that controls shine while maintaining a smooth texture.
For a luxurious touch, consider Tatcha’s The Liquid Silk Canvas, which not only helps to control oil but also blurs imperfections and creates a velvety-smooth base. Apply your chosen primer with your fingertips or a brush, focusing on areas prone to oiliness and shine.
Foundation Application
Applying foundation correctly is essential for achieving a flawless, polished appearance. Each type of foundation requires a different technique to ensure an even, smooth finish. If you’re using a tinted moisturiser, which offers a lighter, more natural coverage, simply apply it with your fingertips. The creamy texture blends effortlessly into the skin, so gently massage it in for a seamless look without the need for brushes or sponges. This method enhances your natural glow and provides a light base that is perfect for a fresh, natural appearance.
For foundations with light to medium coverage, you can also start by using your fingertips to apply the product evenly across your face. To achieve a smooth and well-blended finish, consider using a flat synthetic brush to spread the foundation initially. After applying, use a damp beauty blender to press the product into your skin, which helps to blend it seamlessly and avoids excessive product absorption into the sponge.
When using a full-coverage foundation, it’s best to work with a makeup palette or the back of your hand to dispense the product. Use a damp beauty blender to apply the foundation in small amounts, focusing on blending as you go. For oily skin or areas with visible pores, gently dab the beauty blender rather than dragging it across the skin.
Coconut-Based Foundation Application
Coconut-based foundations offer a natural, nourishing option for creating a flawless finish, especially for fitness models and athletic talent. If you’re using a coconut-infused tinted moisturiser, the process is straightforward. Simply apply it with your fingertips, gently massaging it into the skin. The creamy, hydrating texture of coconut products blends seamlessly, providing a dewy, natural look without the need for additional tools like brushes or sponges.
For a coconut-based foundation with light to medium coverage, start by applying the product with your fingertips to achieve an even base. For a smoother finish, use a flat synthetic brush to distribute the foundation evenly across your face. Follow this by using a damp beauty blender to press the product into the skin, ensuring that it is well-blended and set. This technique helps to avoid product absorption into the sponge and provides a polished, even appearance.
If you’re working with a full-coverage coconut-based foundation, dispense the product onto a makeup palette or the back of your hand. Using a damp beauty blender, apply the foundation in small amounts, blending as you go to achieve a flawless finish. For oily skin or areas with visible pores, use a dabbing motion rather than dragging to prevent excess oil and ensure a smooth, refined look. This method helps create a professional, camera-ready appearance, enhancing your overall look for the shoot

Concealer
Concealers are versatile products that can offer additional coverage under the eyes, serve as an eyeshadow base, or help conceal blemishes. However, for younger individuals, it’s often best to approach concealers with caution as it can sometimes make the skin appear dry or patchy. If concealer is a must, opt for lightweight and hydrating formulas to ensure a smooth, natural finish without accentuating dryness.
When using concealer, especially over foundation, the best technique is to apply a small amount on the back of your hand and warm it up with your fingers. This helps to soften the product, making it easier to blend. Gently dab the concealer onto the targeted areas using your fingertips or a brush, ensuring a seamless blend for a flawless finish. This method helps to achieve a well-blended look without over-drying the skin or creating a cakey appearance

Powder Application
After applying foundation and concealer, setting your makeup with powder is crucial for achieving a polished, long-lasting finish. For those with dry skin, it’s often best to skip the powder entirely, as it can accentuate dryness and create a flaky appearance. Instead, proceed directly to the next step in your makeup routine to maintain a fresh, hydrated look.
For those with oily skin, applying powder helps to control shine and set your makeup in place. Use a round buffing brush to apply a translucent powder, gently pressing it into the skin for a smooth, even finish. Contour and Bronzer Application for a Sculpted Look
When it comes to contouring and adding a sun-kissed glow, choosing between cream and powder bronzers depends largely on personal preference and desired effect. After applying powder, you can opt for either cream or powder bronzer to enhance your facial features. Cream bronzers offer a blendable, dewy finish that can be ideal for creating a more natural, sculpted look. However, they require a bit more time for blending and may need to be set with a powder for longevity. On the other hand, powder bronzers are often quicker and easier to apply, providing a matte finish that can last throughout the day.
Combining both types can be effective as well: start with a cream bronzer to create a base and then set it with a powder bronzer for a longer-lasting, polished finish. Use a brush, beauty blender, or your fingertips to apply and blend the bronzer. Focus on areas below the cheekbones, along the forehead, and the jawline to enhance your facial structure and create a naturally contoured look. This method ensures a flawless, sun-kissed glow that highlights your best features and prepares you perfectly for any shoot.

Cream blushes provide a dewy, natural finish and are excellent for adding a fresh, radiant glow. They blend seamlessly into the skin and can be applied with your fingertips or a brush for a soft, natural look. Powder blushes, on the other hand, offer a more traditional matte finish and are easy to build up for more intensity. Highlighter for a Radiant Glow
Highlighters are essential for adding a touch of luminosity to key areas of your face, such as the brow bones, inner corners of the eyes, cheeks, and nose. To achieve a radiant finish, use a small flat or pointed brush to apply highlighter to the eyes for a precise and defined sparkle. This technique helps to brighten the eyes and make them appear more awake.
For the cheeks and nose, a round blending brush is ideal. Apply the highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones and the bridge of your nose to enhance your facial structure and create a glowing, youthful appearance.
